Dryzone Software

Real time visual interface

The kiln operator can observe the measured moisture content on the computer monitor in real time, from 100% MC to dry. This provides an excellent diagnostic tool. Experience has shown that the following faults can be detected almost immediately:

1. Some overhead fans not working
2. One of the fans turning in the wrong direction
3. Incorrect baffling
4. Some timber stacks have lower initial moisture content than other.

Early detection of these problems allows the kiln operator to intervene before drying degrade is caused. Kiln operators can also uses the software as an educational tool to further their knowledge of timber drying. Our experience has shown that the system is especially valuable in the instance where the kiln supervisor (operator) has little experience of timber drying.

Moisture content plots on Dryzone PC

Problems that result in drying defects that  are not necessarily caused by the drying process can also be detected early when drying commences. A typical example is the following:

One timber stack has been stacked several hours before the other three stacks (for a four stack kiln). This stack is now standing in the yard and experience significant air drying (aggravated by windy conditions). When the kiln is loaded the situation arises where one stack has a MC of 70% while the other three stacks has a MC of above 100%. It is not possible to dry this kiln charge evenly as the stack that experienced air drying will have significantly lower MC at the end-point of drying.

Our experience has shown that Dryzone software assist the operator to develop an awareness of the complexity of the drying process.

Data archiving

The moisture content plots (trends) from green to dry are stored on the PC after every drying run. This allows the kiln supervisor to retrieve drying data of a specific charge  to establish if the particular charge has been dried correctly, specifically if the charge has been stopped at the correct moisture content.

This feature is especially valuable if some kiln charges has been stopped in the middle of the night, or to settle a dispute over moisture content of boards.
